independence day for who (or is it whom?)

yes, on this day (actually two days prior),
this country that we now know to be
the united states of america
(although quite different back then)
declared its independence from England;
the great colonizers of the time.

but it wasn’t true independence;
black people were enslaved;
they were property;
women were treated poorly
and not trusted to vote;
they were property;
white men with land ruled the day.

[collar stay bumps,
words with friends,
siri,
google.]

whoever (or whomever) says they
miss the
good ol’ days is not to be trusted;
granted, i’ve only heard white men
utter this phrase, so you know it’s doubly true.
